Little Red, by Bethan Woollvin, is a re-imagining of the classic story, Little Red Riding Hood, with one major exception. Instead of a hunter or woodcutter coming along to save Little Red, she saves herself and dispatches the wolf off the page.

Man, I love Bethan Woollvin’s illustrations. I might stumble here as I don’t have the vocabulary for art, but they seem quite tonal. We don’t get a lot of color. The use of negative space really defines the illustrations as well.

Reasons to love

Empowering girls. It’s a great feminist update that women don’t need men to save them.

Watch out for Little Red. She’s all alone in the forest and coming to a bookshelf near you. This is a great book.
